Hupay Café Is Worth A Penny (Review)
Food plays an extremely important role in everyone's lives, and if I say food, it means good food. I believe everyone agrees to that. Unless you came from an unidentified planet and eating (food) is not part of your daily routine. Fine. Pun intended.
Let's get down to business, shall we?
Escalante City in Negros Occidental has almost ninety-five thousand residents, and I hope I am part of the headcount despite my nine-year absence. As of this year, there have been tons of starting local food centers in the city, including one that piques every inch of my interest. Yeah. You'll feel me if you are into reggae. If you're not, I am certain you'd still feel the same.
Hupay Café
I first visited Hupay Café in April 2017 with one of my son's godmothers, (Ninang GV). Actually, she was the one who informed me about the new food shop, which is co-owned by a good friend (hi doc!). Hupay is sandwiched (pardon the pun) between Tiknoy's (a small drink shop) and Aqua Eduardo (a drinking water shop). Please do not expect its facade to be a fancy one as we are not situated in an upscale location like New York City. The truth is, the place reminds me of my favorite reggae bar in Makati called B-side.
You know the reggae legend Bob Marley, eh? He welcomes customers right at the entrance of Hupay Café. There is a small table that will treat those smokers, musicians, and the spectators. It is worthy to note that they do have weekend jammin' and everyone is welcome to join especially when you're a musician at heart.

The shell set up of the shop is super cool. As seen in the photo below, the words "Good Vibes" were painstakingly written using a pink street art spray paint (that's my guess). The letter Os though were crafted through the wheels of a classic bicycle. The glass doors take you to the shop's small air-conditioned dining room with so much good vibe hand-painted photos by an artist friend, Patrick Solatorio.

Hupay Café makes sure that you can count on their ambiance. A cool ambiance that is. You could say that.
Photos of the infamous music icons such as Bob Marley, Franco, Ely Buendia, among others were carefully hanged in the walls of Hupay Café. If you want to sit with your feet tucked in (my favorite), you can choose their sit-on-the-ground part of the shop with tiny tables, throw pillows, and native floor mat.

As for the food, which is of course very important, it's all good. If you are into spicy, I recommend their Spicy Chicken Nachos for only P75. The only wrinkle (for me) to this is that the chips they use are the literal ones like the Mr. Chips. Nachos is often served with Tortilla chips I understand, but I always opt for a healthier one like the fried lumpia (Filipino) wrapper. I am not throwing a major shade on this, by the way.

They also offer Frappes with different flavors of your choosing. It's good, but I guess I want more challenge. A bit tastier, perhaps?
They have coffee, cold drinks, and more. If you don't have much time to stay, you can choose to take your order out, but they charge P5. It's fine, but I guess it should be part of the cost.
I haven't tried visiting Hupay Café at night, so I believe they play a little cooler music other than Bruno Mars'. My son loves it though. They are open between 4:30 p.m. and 11-ish.
Overall, Hupay Café can "satisfy your soul" at 95 percent.
